We are Oaks of Righteousness

I painted again today.  In between text messages, and praying for divine intervention for backpacks for our community and playing with my much neglected little princess, I painted.  It is an accomplishment, and so I celebrate. It is my act of worship and my act of loving myself enough to carve out the time to do something that ministers to me.
So as I looked at the canvas that was written on during one of our "River" worship nights I prayed and asked the Lord to speak.
He always does, if we ask and sit still.  So as I poured paint onto canvas and listened, this is what He gave me:
We are oaks of righteousness to display His glory.  As I painted, the trees sprang forth and Gold highlights got dabbed on their trunks as they stretched towards the light.  The skys may be cloudy and dark but there is always light, always an opportunity to reflect His glory.

Dear Lord, let my eyes see the beauty that is coming out of the darkness, let me remember that the clouds often carry the Glory.  Let me see and believe the best, let me look with expectancy for your light and let me grow towards that light revealing and reflecting your beauty.  The tree doesn't have to work to grow, it just does.  Help me to just grow, no striving only loving.  Help me to nurture those growing around me that we would all be called oaks of righteousness. Help me to bring a message of hope and to have a praising heart.   Amen.

Announce Freedom to All Captives
1 The Spirit of God, the Master, is on me because God anointed me. He sent me to preach good news to the poor, heal the heartbroken, Announce freedom to all captives, pardon all prisoners. 2 God sent me to announce the year of his grace— a celebration of God's destruction of our enemies— and to comfort all who mourn, 3 To care for the needs of all who mourn in Zion, give them bouquets of roses instead of ashes, Messages of joy instead of news of doom, a praising heart instead of a languid spirit. Rename them "Oaks of Righteousness" planted by God to display his glory.

Isaiah 61:1-3 (MSG)

Banishing Fear From My Holy Place

My Holy Place full of messy creative inspiration

This is my creative space, my Holy place.  This is where, so often I hear from the Lord.  I decided to be brave and paint over one of our worship night canvases.  I have been hesitant to do that or maybe I should say scared.  Scared that I would stink, scared that I wouldn't do a good enough job, scared that I wouldn't measure up.  What a bunch of sh*t.  I know I have taken to using this word way to much.

So I decided that I have been preaching for over a year about being brave, about being daring, about not being afraid to fail and here I was being a hypocrite.  Being fearful.  I am ashamed to admit it.  It is funny how being fearful is wrapped up in so much of our lives.  The fear of failure keeping us from living free.

I remember being an art student in college and one of my professors saying the worst thing for creativity is fear of what others think.  I can remember him clearly saying paint what you like, even if others don't think its art.  This was during a season that I particularly loved doing mono prints, loved the mashing together of paints and then I would work back into them with different tools either removing paint or layering on more paint.  This was some of my happiest times as an artist, free from conventional study and the rigors of trying to create something very perfect and realistic.  This was a time of experimenting with colors and textures.  The driving force of my life up to this point had been perfect or not at all and this freedom with this professor was new and welcome.

Fast forward almost thirty years and turns out freedom didn't win for a lot of those years.  Until now, now freedom is winning bit by bit.  Its not easy.  I am learning to recognize when something is fear driven.  I have taken to more risk than ever before in my life.  I suppose what I have lived through in the last few years has brought me to this new found freedom.

Franklin Roosevelt said, "The only thing we have to fear is fear itself".

It is true.  There is no truth in fear.
Fear is itself the enemy, not the things that it keeps us from doing.  I am not afraid of painting, I am afraid of not being good enough for your approval or even my approval.  Fear is the culprit here.

So I looked at the canvas with all the precious words that people had written on it during our nights of worship.  I read the prayers and declarations and they ministered to me.  I asked the Lord to guide me as I poured paint onto the canvas, I prayed for those who had written on the canvas.  I couldn't bare to cover the canvas completely, I had to leave some of the words showing through.  You can still see much of what was poured out of others hearts on the canvas and then hopefully you can see my heart poured out on top of theirs.

I felt wildly insecure as I painted.  My heart twisted briefly as I felt so unworthy of such a calling, to partner with what was written and create something new.  Then I remembered what I have preached a thousand times....I am worthy, because of Jesus.  When something didn't look quite right I remembered that imperfection is beautiful and that perfection is bondage.  I watched closely as the paints and inks ran together and I loved the mashing of the colors.  I loved it.  I felt the freedom that comes from loving your own thing, regardless of its imperfections.  It was in those dripping, swirling imperfections that I saw such beauty and felt such joy.  My life is a swirling, drippy, messy, beautiful piece of art.  Unexpected tragedies and joys blending together to create a masterpiece.

Last week I had a bad day, just one day.  I said to someone that I am angry about my life, it isn't what I wanted.  Later I felt so sad because in truth I think that is what I struggle with, this unholy discontent.  However I also know that my life is so much more than I could have imagined or hoped for, much richer with love than I have ever experienced, my home, my family, my church, I am so thankful. Yet when the darkness comes, it is easy to forget all the good.  In the dark of that day, I simply asked the Lord to forgive me and I heared Him whisper....it is finished.  The darkest of times, bringing the closest of times with the master. His grace has covered me like a beautiful painting and I am becoming exactly who He has designed me to be even as I am undone in the natural.  This unraveling of all the old and the weaving together of the new is costly and involves a deeper surrender than ever before, but it is sweet and I welcome it.  Fear is losing and love is winning.

The light and beauty are coming to the surface and the pain can be seen dimly now in the background.  God never quits talking to me, I just sometimes grow deaf and dumb to His voice, the roar of grief drowns out His still quite voice, then life slows down and I press in and hear him again.
I guess that is the struggle of the human condition....we forget how desperately we need Him every moment.

Thank God He never gives up on me, He is my faithful creator and I am His Masterpiece.

Wish you could see the detail better.....guess you will have to see it in person.

The Princess and the Poop

This morning sitting out on my front porch, just a swinging....I feel like breaking into song as I write these words. Okay so I just did.  How fun, to just have a song in your heart.  But that is not what this is about....

So we were just swinging and playing with our little "Princess".  Throwing pinecones and letting her chase them down, her tiny little legs running as fast as she can and then running back with the pinecone clenched tightly in her itty bitty cute mouth then dropping it gently at our feet.  Then we would start all over....sounds silly but it is fun for us.

Then my husband threw the pinecone and Princess took off after it and suddenly dug her feet in the ground and almost toppled over as she did everything in her power NOT to touch the pinecone. Her rear legs still in motion, she looked almost like a cartoon doggie as she came to a sudden stop.  She circled it, smelled it and then backed away.  She turned her head towards us as if to say, I am not so sure about this....Turns out the pinecone had landed in a big pile of poop.

Isn't that the way life is sometimes.  You are just running and playing, happy go lucky and suddenly there is a big pile of poop.  You just didn't see it coming, I just didn't see it coming.  But there it is, messing up the plan, messing up the fun.  Somebody elses stuff just starts affecting you.  Then we have the choice, the stinking choice.  How are we going to respond?  Will we quit playing?  Will it ruin our day? Will we step into it or keep our distance?

We made Princess stay away from the poop, it was no longer her pinecone to play with.  It had been contaminated by the big dog poop.   I am not sure what dog the poop belongs to but I know for sure it wasn't hers.  She is a tiny little dog, with tiny little poopies, this was a big dog poop.  We chose to go looking for another pinecone.  I suppose I will go out later today and clean the poop out of the yard and throw the pinecone away.  I don't want her to be tempted by it.  Like we so often are....

So often in life we get involved in the poop that doesn't belong to us.  Rather than changing course, being flexible or looking for whatever the new thing is God has for us.  We run full speed ahead into the poop and then wonder why we can't get the stench off us.  Poop stinks.  Everyone has it, but we don't have to be involved in everyone elses.  Let's keep our yard clean and invite them into our yard and help them scrape off the mess.   Such a simple lesson....Stay out of the poop, don't step in it.  It doesn't belong to you. Let's face it we have enough of our own....hahahaha....

Dear Lord, help us not to step in other people's messes.  Help us to stay away from things that are not of you, to have healthy boundries, and when we accidentily step into it will you help us to not let it rob us of our joy.  Help us to scrape it off just like we scrape poop off our shoe.  Help us to keep the right focus and not take on the stench of this earths poop.  Help us to bring the smell of heaven to this earth.  Help us be the air freshner for the poop. We declare we are not going to step into it and drag it around with us.  No way.  Help us Lord to let love lead us in all things.  Amen.

Expression is the Opposite of Depression

Expression is the opposite of depression.

I saw this on instagram, I knew this but had never heard it like this. It hit me like a ton of bricks or like a big fat truck.  This is the story of my life.  At times I struggle to hold everything inside, to only let parts of me show.  Those times always lead to times of darkness.  The effort to hide my heart, hide my feelings leaves me feeling unknown and isolated.  It takes me right back to the path I have fought so hard to get off......the smoke and mirror me.  The real me hidden and scared she will be rejected so she puts up a smoke screen.  The perfect little princess, the put together, the earn your love, this smoke screen was exhausting.

The old me, went out the window when she had no ability any longer to keep it all in and then the new me took over.  The real me came roaring out and turns out the real me could be really happy.  So I paint and write and expose parts of me that are vulnerable.  I am honest about the pain, the joy and the struggle.

Not that I have figured it all out, just some of it.....and I trust God to protect my heart.  It's not my job anymore to create myself into someone others will approve of.  Its my job to create an expression of love for my Heavenly Father and reveal what freedom looks like to others.  Freedom is always fueled by love, and it can't be held in.  Love is a creative roar, and it looks different for each of us.

Turns out I like to ROAR.  Who knew this could be so rewarding?  This lioness thing, this hear me roar thing?  So be brave my friends, live in freedom and express yourself.  I think you will find a loving community that prefers character, brokennes, and vulnerability to perfection and facades.  I believe with all my heart we are meant to live in community that celebrates truth in all things.  That freedom can be found in community; Freedom to be authentic, freedom to be accepted, freedom to grow, freedom to live as God designed us, it is ours to live and ours to show to the world.

You are an expression of His great love, now express it to the world.  Find the good, find the glory, find the hope, find the joy, find the love and let it roar.  And just in case you can't find that, then roar out your pain....thats okay too.  People please give us and by us I mean all of us... the freedom to be sad sometimes.  He wouldn't have sent a comforter, if we weren't sometimes going to need comfort.  If you are sad and stuggling let it out, express it...stay in the light as much as possible....you may teeter on the edge but God will not let you out of His grasp.  Let's all find our way to our true freedom, to our roar, to our true expression of who we were created to be.

Much love to you my brave friends.

Debbie

Turning broken into beautiful

We turned our broken into beautiful.....a few of my notes from that powerful message.  Love you ladies so much!

17 Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. 18 But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as from the Lord, the Spirit.
2 Cor 3:17-18 (NASB)   #glory2glory
That word transformed in the greek is the same root word for metamorphosis just like the butterfly, in the greek it was meant to signify something going from ugly to beautiful.
·         This is what it means in Isaiah when it talks about Jesus giving us beauty for ashes.

3 To all who mourn in Israel, he will give a crown of beauty for ashes, a joyous blessing instead of mourning, festive praise instead of despair. Isaiah 61:3 (NLT)
·
That is what our Jesus does, He brings the beauty of our struggles….He takes the hard things and helps turn them into beautiful things.  Places where we see His hand, feel His presence, know His goodness even when what we are going through isn’t good,  etc.
·        WE must be willing to give him the ashes of our lives. Or as Paul said I count it all as rubbish compared to the riches of Christ….
These ashes, these struggles become points of growth and depth and strength…those things push us along our journey towards contentment and love…..from glory to glory….
·        I have never met a strong person with an easy past.
We are meant to grow stronger from one destination to the next….not from mess to mess but from glory to glory.
·
This means that somehow in order to get to the next level we have to figure out how to bring the glory into our current struggle.  Take the mess and build glory out of the broken pieces.

Take our pieces and invite the Holy One into the mess!  Bring the presence of God right into the center of it all, change your mess into place of holiness, redeem it by filling that space with grace that comes from Jesus.

It is something like a mosaic….taking the broken pieces and turning it into something glorious…. I found this quote on my grief journey and thought it was so impactful….

People can’t know how beautiful you are until your brokenness is lit from within. Please hear me I am not saying go look for things that will break you so you can be strong….Life will give you little trials to develop your skills without even having to look…But let that brokeness be redeemed and used to shine the light of Jesus!

Sure you can look all sparkly and shiny from the outside but….
In the darkness when all you have is the light that is when you shine in the most beautiful of ways….

Thats when the pieces of broken dreams, shattered hearts and empty places get put back together with Jesus glue we become lit from within and all the scars turn out to be the pieces holding the beauty together.
That is what redemption is after all….taking broken humanity and restoring it to it’s original beauty.  It’s the divine exchange.
It happens instantly, but also over time as we let go of the old and reach for the new….as we bring Jesus into the mess of broken pieces and allow the Master to piece it all back together with Jesus glue!!

What No One Tells You....

I am blessed to be a Mother!

I used to cry myself to sleep at night.  I used to wake up crying.  The light of dawn filling the room, for just a moment I would feel peace and like the old me then I would suddenly remember that life as I knew it was over.  There is a marker in my life on that day; The before Justin died and the after Justin died.  They seem like two different lifetimes; like that me was just a shadow of this me.  This me is battle tested and nothing compares to this.  The beating of grief has washed over me day in and day out like torture.  No one tells you it will be like that, no one tells you the dark thoughts you will have.  How you will lay in bed wishing you could die(nobody wants to admit that).  How regret will cause you to question everything in your life.  How time stands still and yet suddenly weeks have gone by and you can’t remember how you functioned every day.  No one tells you that anger will fill your heart, spilling over unto those closeset to you.  How you will look for things to distract you but in the end your mind will always return to the pain.  No one tells you how alone you will feel even when you are surrounded by people or how hollow everyone’s words will seem.  No one tells you how your theology will get tested and twisted.  No one tells you how dark the darkest depths are and that when you are there you will want to claw your way out but you will be paralyzed and unable to do anything.  No one tells you that God will seem distant and hope will seem bleak.  I suppose they are hoping it will be different for you, not so horrific.

The cold hard truth is it is impossible to describe the pain, there are no words in the dictionary that can adequately express the madness of it all. That your worst imaginations will never measure up to the true pain.  No one can tell you that eventually you will find your way back out of the darkness and that faith will be increased, if you just hold on.  You just can't believe them.  You have to figure that out for yourself, moment by moment, day by day.

Yet, at the very heart of it is this one fact…..it does gradually get easier, it never goes away of that I am certain.  If a day goes by and I don’t think about Justin, then just as soon as I hit the pillow there he is.  A thought, a memory, will flood in and drown me.  No one tells you how often you will be thrown back into the depths.  How someone who looks like your loved one will make you want to run and hug them, how some smell will remind you or how every holiday will be different because that loved one is not there.  There is a longing that will never be filled on this side of heaven and so we simply put one foot in front of the other and keep marching onward towards the finish line.

Along the way there is plenty to celebrate and enough joy to overcome the sorrow (most of the time).  I refuse to be defined by this tragedy, but it has certainly changed me.  Grief has shaped me and even more so God has used it to shape me.  He has remodeled my heart and repurposed my life.   I am a completely different person in so many ways, that is not to say I don’t like the new me.  I think I do, it’s just hard to get used to her.  This new me cares very little about perfection, appearances or what anyone else thinks about me.  This new me, cares more about love than loss, more about others than self, more about hope than reality, more about heaven than hell, more about grace than the “in your face” truth that I used to feel so strongly about, I care more about surrender than winning, basically this new me is an upgrade from the old me

It’s a hard thing to say God can turn all things to the good when it is your child that is missing from your life.  But I can say that…..He is(meaning it is a process) turning all things to the good.   I can emphatically say that healing comes through both laughter and tears and the struggle does make you stronger.  No matter what you are walking through, it will not last forever.  One day we will step into heaven and there will be no tears there.  So in the meantime find some laughter and shed some tears.  I promise, it will get better. Celebrate what you do have.  I have two wonderful sons and I am thankful for that.

It is getting better, I am getting better, I am celebrating....except when I am not.  There is grace for the back and forth pace of grief.

I just finished the “trifecta” of grief events; Justins birthday, Together in His Arms 5K and Mothers Day all in one week.
I thought I was doing okay with it, even a little proud of myself until........ I lost my sh*t over missing tables at church.  Seriously, lost it.  Acted like a crazy woman.  Something about losing things makes me a mad woman.  I have already lost something so huge that I don’t want to lose anything else….even if it is just tables. So my pattern when this happens is to get ridiculously worked up, search and scream until I find whatever is missing.  I suppose it has something to do with having no power to find my son and so I want to exert my power to find anything lost.  Then when it is found, I realize that I wasn’t rational at all which is embarrassing and so I start to cry.  I repeat over and over again I just wanted to find it, as if that makes any sense.  Yesterday, after we found the tables,  I saw our ushers face as he was trying to talk to me and I was starting to cry and mumble, I just needed to find them.  He was slowly backing away completely perplexed and I realized I am a bit freaky. Thankfully he is full of grace.

Anyway….. I made it through, which is my point.  In the end, we make it through.  Whatever it is, however it looks, we win in the end.  It gets better.  I know letting go of my grief isn’t the same as letting go of my Son and memories of him.  Letting go just means trusting God to keep Justin alive in my heart in the good days and the bad days until we get there.

Thank you to all my friends and family that extend grace and shine the light in my life.  We live in hope that our lives will light the way for those that walk this journey behind us.  Make the world a brighter place people!

My Boy Has Two Birthdays

He was my baby once.  It is easy to forget that when you see the pictures of him all grown up.  He was my baby that changed the course of my life.  I say He rescued Me.  My party-party lifestyle immediately halted the moment I found out.  I would choose my baby.  I would keep it a secret, take my last semester loaded with college classes in order to graduate In time.  All the while knowing my body was making a baby.  The minute I felt the butterfly wings of his tiny little body move in my stomach I loved him.  I was scared but I didn’t care.

His delivery is etched in my heart.  That shocking pain that no amount of classes can prepare you for, the brutality of pushing a baby out and the beauty of falling unbelievably in love in a matter of moments.
When I first looked at Justin I literally felt love like I had never experienced before.  The rush of hope and joy that filled my heart as I looked into his eyes was overwhelming, this was my son.  No amount of commotion going on in that room could cause me to stop looking at my boy.

As I stared at him, a sweet peace descended as I thought to myself; everything has changed, I will never be the same again.

And I wasn’t the same; it was never the same again.  Life became more than me, it became us.  That new life would lead us to California and eventually into a life with Christ.  He changed me, he made me better and I will forever be grateful for that.  He was funny, the funniest of all my boys, he brought laughter and tears.  He was complicated, sensitive and passionate.  He loved with his whole heart, no holding back.  That passion could be a good thing or a bad thing.  When he was good, he was very good but when he was bad you had better watch out.  His imperfections made him vulnerable but not any less loved.  In the end it isn't what he wasn't that we remember but what he was. Chosen and loved.  The life of the party, any party.  Funny and passsionate.   And he was made in me,  in my belly.  He will always be a part of me.    He was perfectly imperfect like the rest of us.  Just a sinner saved by grace.

Now, my boy has a new birthday….a heaven birthday.  Born into heaven on Sept 23, 2013 and on that day I sat at my kitchen table and thought to myself….I will never be the same again, and I am not.

But Love Remains.

The Fear Monster

So I have been thinking a lot about fear.  It is still sometimes and has been a destabilizing force in my life, a gnawing at the back of my brain. Like a little mouse chewing on a piece of cheese, fear  nibbles on my brain daily.  I don't even realize it until I discover the missing cheese.  Hahahahhaaaa get it?  I do think I heard once that fear truly does eat away at brain matter....but I also could just be making that up.

I often think I am brave only to discover I am not.  You know that moment when you see someone, you wish you hadn't.  You see them and you can't run and hide down an aisle because it is too late. So you are brave not because you are, but because there is no cowards way out.  Then the only brave thing to do is choose love.  As fear nibbles at your brain, rejection grips your heart the only choice right then standing in the middle of that store is to choose love.  It's not because your brave, its not because there is an absence of fear, it's because it is what Jesus would do.

Somewhere in the middle of all the mess, all the brokenness and beauty we don't necessarily learn how to be brave but we learn how to be love and that helps us to be brave.  Being brave doesn't mean we don't feel fear, it just means that even though you feel fear, love outweighs it....so you still do it! Sometimes choosing love is the bravest thing we can do.

Fear is always behind rash decisions, hurtful dissensions, judgement and all sorts of wicked things because we are not created to be carriers of fear.  So when it gives birth to action it brings hell to earth not heaven.  Fear keeps us from enjoying the "right now" moments of our lives, keeps us from jumping off the high dive, keeps us from trusting others, keeps us from hoping because we can't bear to be disappointed, keeps us from chasing our dreams because we don't want to fail, I could go on and on or you could just fill in the blank with whatever fear keeps you from doing.   You can probably even think about a little hell you bring to earth with your own fears.  It rears its ugly head in lot's of ways....control, protection, gossip, anger, etc.  WE all experience fear, it's how we handle it that counts.

What matters is that when we want to run and hide instead we stand and face the giant(fear).  What counts is that when we want to lash out and protect instead we choose love.  When we feel afraid we stop and ask ourselves.... what or who is greater, this fear or the one who is in me?   And sometimes in the middle of the store you choose love and it turns out not to be that bad.

We are created to be carriers of love, fear just gets in the way of that and makes us more inclined to run, than stand and love.  The love in the Bible stands even in the face of fear.  If you don't believe me read it's definition of love....that's some pretty heavy stuff.  Persevering, forgiving, believing the best, patience, long suffering, etc.

I can't get rid of all the fear that creeps into the corners of my mind but I can choose to live in love and trust that perfect love to cast out fear.  Turns out the giants/fears only have the power we give them, fear is for the most part belief in something that hasn't even happened. Unless you are on the high dive and then that seems totally real to me...legit.   Seems to me fear is the opposite of faith and hope.  So when we look at the giants in front of us through eyes of faith, hope and love all the sudden we realize they are not really that big at all.  HE IS GREATER.

I want to live in hope.  I can't change the world, but I can change my world.  I choose faith, hope and love.

Love you people, you make me brave!

The Freedom of Grace

I had quite a few people ask me for my notes so instead I decided to just post them.  Enjoy and be encouraged to live free!  We can do this people, we can let go of the law and live in the glory of the grace!  Love you people.

The Freedom of Grace Message-Debbie Hornsby

Opening:
Continuing our grace series today, our topic is the freedom of grace.  You see before grace entered our lives we were slaves, the exact opposite of free;  Slaves to sin, slaves to the law, slaves to fear, slaves to the world.  BUT Jesus…..set us free!  The question is then why don’t we live like we are free?  Many of us seem to return to being shackled to fear, the law, the world, etc.
Let’s Pray: wisdom, revelation, hope, transformation
Slide 1  Let’s start off by looking at Galatians 3
13 Christ (Remember we have been teaching that Christ was grace in bodily form…the manifestation of what we could not earn ourselves.) redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written: "Cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree." 14 He redeemed us in order that the blessing given to Abraham might come to the Gentiles through Christ Jesus, so that by faith we might receive the promise of the Spirit.
Gal 3:13-14 (NIV)
Don't we all wish we could be free from sin and its consequences once and for all? Well, according to Galatians 3:13, we already are!
We just haven't comprehended it yet! Let me give you an illustration of this before we dive into our teaching today…..I heard a story once about a man who had a goat he dearly loved.
Very late one night, he received a telephone call from the local police, who informed him that his goat had wandered away from home, had been hit by a car, and now lay dead in a ditch by the side of the road.
This man was grieved and brokenhearted, but he knew he needed to retrieve the dead goat. When he approached the ditch where the goat lay, he saw that the goat was very much alive! Its legs were bound with rope, which let my friend know that someone had kidnapped the goat and then dumped it in the ditch on the side of the road.
Jubilantly, he leaped into the bottom of the ditch, pulled out his pocketknife, cut the ropes, slapped the goat on its backside, and said, "Get up!" But the goat just lay there with its legs still clinging to each other as if they were still bound with rope. He hit her a second time, then a third time. Then he yelled at her one last time, "Get up!"
This man thought to himself, Bless this dumb ol' goat! It's free and doesn't even know it!
He reached down and pulled apart the goat's legs; then he lifted it and set it on its feet. Only then did the goat realize it wasn't bound anymore.
When I heard this story, it made me think about us as believers.
Slide 2 We don't need to get free—we are free! Jesus' work on the Cross totally purchased our redemption and freedom.
Although Jesus broke the bonds of slavery and the devil has no legal hold on believers anymore, most believers still lay on their sides in the bottom of the ditch, wishing they could get free. The chains that hold them are an illusion, because Jesus already paid the price for their release!
That word redeemed in Galatians is a beautiful greek word that paints a picture….the word is a compound of two words ex which means out and agoridzo which most often depicted a slave market.  A slave market where human beings were treated like animals and bought and sold, given no value other than for what service/work they could provide.
Together these two words reveal the picture of someone going in with the intention of purchasing a slave for the sole purpose of setting them free….permanent removal from captivity.
Slide 3        In Isaiah we see the foreshadowing of Jesus in the statement Isaiah 61:1-11
The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me, because the Lord has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners, 2 to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor and the day of vengeance of our God, to comfort all who mourn, 3 and provide for those who grieve in Zion-- to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair.
Isaiah 61:1-3 (NIV)
God sent Jesus not just to inspect our condition of slavery and locate us in our sinfulness but to buy us out of our miserable condition and then place us into his family as his own child.  Forever removed from the curse of sin and the law.  It’s a done deal…
No longer slaves to the law
You see the Law came by Moses but grace and truth came through Jesus.
You see the law says…..btw 613 laws       The law says…..You do your part and then God will do His part.
You do good, you get good.  You do bad, you get bad.  You have to pay for what you do wrong….We tend to get caught up in this bad theology.  It’s true there are some natural consequences to doing good or doing bad but let’s be honest….when we carry this theology of Law into our lives we diminish the finished work on the cross.
We strive to be good enough to earn God’s love, we worry that we haven’t been good enough so God might allow something bad to happen to us or our family, We try to control things because this theology leads us to think we can somehow manipulate God into treating us well….This is not freedom.
We become those who are always looking for the perfect equation to get what we want from God.
We become those who are always performing like a circus monkey trying to get a treat.
You see when we are still returning to the law….it is only a fraction of the glory the Lord intends for us…are you saved yes…..are you living in freedom?   Are we living in the full glory?
Slide 4
7 The old way, with laws etched in stone, led to death, though it began with such glory that the people of Israel could not bear to look at Moses’ face. For his face shone with the glory of God, even though the brightness was already fading away.8 Shouldn’t we expect far greater glory under the new way, now that the Holy Spirit is giving life?9 If the old way, which brings condemnation, was glorious, how much more glorious is the new way, which makes us right with God!10 In fact, that first glory was not glorious at all compared with the overwhelming glory of the new way.11 So if the old way, which has been replaced, was glorious, how much more glorious is the new, which remains forever!
2 Cor 3:7-11 (NLT)
Slide 5  Not under law but under grace 14 For sin shall not be your master, because you are not under law, but under grace.
Romans 6:14 (NIV)
Have you ever told someone an argument was finished, only to have them start arguing again?  Stop arguing with Jesus, we are not under the law….just believe.
But still we return to the Law….striving and judging, performing and trying to earn…
God is not impressed with our performances because His son already did it all and now we think we can somehow improve of what Jesus has done.
Don’t get on the cross, your blood won’t work.
When Jesus hung on the cross he said it is finished
We don’t have to earn His grace.  Grace came in the form of Jesus.
We don’t have to behave perfect.  Grace came and perfected us.
We don’t have to be afraid of failure.  Grace came and won….once and for all.
No earning, no striving, no rule following….whaaaaaat that’s crazy?
·         WE live under the covenant of grace.  The law of grace.

·         The new covenant is heaven’s solution to man’s faithlessness.

·         God rigged the system by downloading His thoughts and guidelines into our hearts when we accept Christ.
·         Grace means we no longer live under the law but under the Holy Spirit.
·         I’m not saying this is license to go wild, I am saying let your heart settle on the greatness of this.  We don’t want to abuse grace but we do want to live in it.
Slide 7
6 But now we have been released from the law, for we died to it and are no longer captive to its power. Now we can serve God, not in the old way of obeying the letter of the law, but in the new way of living in the Spirit.
Romans 7:6 (NLT)
Slide 8 No longer slave to the flesh
Gal 5:18 16 So I say, let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. Then you won’t be doing what your sinful nature craves.17 The sinful nature wants to do evil, which is just the opposite of what the Spirit wants. And the Spirit gives us desires that are the opposite of what the sinful nature desires. These two forces are constantly fighting each other, so you are not free to carry out your good intentions.18 But when you are directed by the Spirit, you are not under obligation to the law of Moses. Gal 5:16-18 (NLT)

·           Don’t keep the law but be filled with the Holy Spirit.
·         You don’t’ need law when you have fruit of the spirit.   Remember Jesus said the law could be summed up in these two statements.  Love the Lord and Love your neighbor.
·         When we are caught up in sin, we have a love problem……
You can’t have both the law and the fruit….the law chokes out the fruit of the spirit. Of which the greatest is love.
The law tells us what to do but the Sprit tells us how to do it.  Ex:  law tells you to love your wife, the Holy Spirit teaches you how to love your wife.
Let me see if I can explain this differently.
The law….which created legalism and took away freedom, put the Israelites in bondage to the High Priest.  Under the law there was condemnation.  Under the law we were slaves to sin.
·         So basically that was behavior modification.

·         Jesus came to bring transformation not behavior modification.

·         The Law is fear driven motivation whereas,  love is the motivation of grace.

·         Fear is not the best motivator, love is!  LOVE WINS

Christ was obedient to the point of death not out of fear of His heavenly father but for the joy that was set before him, for love.
Jesus is whispering gently to us….just believe it is finished.  The Spirit has come that you might have life and life abundant…..don’t return to the law and its dead works.
In this fallen, broken world we just can’t believe it could be that easy….Just believe, stop arguing.
Let go of the law so you can live under the ministry of the Holy Spirit.
Slide 9 Freedom from Condemnation
1 Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. 2 For the law of the Spirit of life [1]in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death. 3 For what the Law could not do, weak as it was through the flesh, God did: sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and as an offering for sin, He condemned sin in the flesh, 4 so that the requirement of the Law might be fulfilled in us, who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.
Romans 8:1-4 (NASB)
I want to explain something to you.  Condemnation is the work of Satan.  He wants to put you back in slavery to him.  When we condemn ourselves we are actually lessoning the finished work of the cross.  WE are effectively not believing that the blood of Jesus is enough to cover our sin.
Condemnation becomes the breeding ground for separation from God….not on God’s part but on our part.  Remember God looking in the garden for Adam and Eve, they had separated themselves and hidden.
When we condemn ourselves we are putting ourselves back under the law.  Making ourselves judge….separating ourselves from God…often times walking away from God because we feel that we are now unlovable or too far gone for his grace.
Starting a vicious cycle of believing that we can somehow lose the grace of God putting ourselves back under the condemnation of the law and then we put everyone else under the law as well.  We become religious, regulated and condemning based on fear instead of love.
All the while Jesus is whispering, just believe.  It is simple. Grace, the freedom gift.  Believe and receive it.
No longer slaves to fear.  Almost all fears can fall into one of two categories.
Fear of death and fear of man.  All of us struggle to some degree with these….
We know death has lost it’s sting….we no longer die but live!  Yet, we all can allow fear to creep in…death is scary, grief is hard, here is the thing….we are all going to die….
So if Satan can get us preoccupied with fear of losing someone or our own life….he can keep us from living in the fullness of Joy …he can make the Christian world look just as hopeless as the unsaved world and damage the cause of Christ.
Fear of Man.  Jesus died so that we would have full confidence in our identity so that we would be set free from the fear of man…..so what is the fear of man?
·         Fear of rejection
·         Perfectionism  (see above)
·         Fear of failure-which often causes procrastination or complete paralysis of analysis
·         Fear of not being good enough
·         Fear of bad things happening so we control
·         Fear of being hurt so we don’t freely love others.
·         Fear of being exposed as a sinner so we don’t live authentic lives
Scripture teaches us that perfect love cast out fear.  Why?
Perfect love is Jesus.  Understanding and knowing Who he is and who we are….changes everything….
When I understand there is no death, that we are all just pilgrims passing through, that death has lost it’s sting,  When I understand that there is nothing that man can do to take me out of God’s hand, when I live in the abiding presence of a faithful, loving, forgiving God I am no longer moved by others approval because His is more enough.
When I understand my position in Him then I can rest in that knowledge and flourish in that freedom.
Let’s look at the story of the Roman Officer because it really teaches us something about position and authority.
Slide 10
The Faith of a Roman Officer
5 When Jesus returned to Capernaum, a Roman officer came and pleaded with him,6 “Lord, my young servant lies in bed, paralyzed and in terrible pain.”7 Jesus said, “I will come and heal him.”8 But the officer said, “Lord, I am not worthy to have you come into my home. Just say the word from where you are, and my servant will be healed.9 I know this because I am under the authority of my superior officers, and I have authority over my soldiers. I only need to say, ‘Go,’ and they go, or ‘Come,’ and they come. And if I say to my slaves, ‘Do this,’ they do it.”10 When Jesus heard this, he was amazed. Turning to those who were following him, he said, “I tell you the truth, I haven’t seen faith like this in all Israel!11 And I tell you this, that many Gentiles will come from all over the world—from east and west—and sit down with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob at the feast in the Kingdom of Heaven.12 But many Israelites—those for whom the Kingdom was prepared—will be thrown into outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”13 Then Jesus said to the Roman officer, “Go back home. Because you believed, it has happened.” And the young servant was healed that same hour.
Matt 8:5-13 (NLT)
Slide 11    This Roman officer understood something very important.  He understood position and authority.  Because of his experience in the military he knew what it was to have the position of an officer and that it carried with it the authority of whom he was positioned under.
We are positioned under Christ, he is the head and we are the body.  He has given us all authority.  We honor Him when we believe this
When we live in a way that is demolishing strongholds and speculations, that is walking in His authority, when we believe that it is finished work.
We too like the roman soldier have been given power and authority.  We don’t have to be fearful but only to live in the certainty of our position and authority
When fear comes we can say to that fear….go!  I don’t have to be perfect because Jesus has empowered me for success and that may mean some failure along the way.  The success is already finished on the cross because I am His.
When fear comes about what someone will say or about their rejection we can say to that fear….Get out of my head, I am a child of God, deeply loved and I have a total acceptance in his grace.
When fear comes that would make me want to jump in and control things, I can say….Jesus you just say the word and I believe it is finished.
·         As New Testament Christians we can live in the freedom that comes from knowing it is finished, Jesus finished it.
We are no longer under the law, we can respond to life from the perspective of it is already finished….
Use our faith to appropriate what is already done.  Not beg God to help us based on our merits….trying to earn his favor…This is fear based theology…..
Instead we simply are believing in position and authority.
I believe for this “for the finances we need”…..thank you Jesus that it is already a finished work!
·         Christ is the end of the Law.  The law fulfilled, the ransom paid, there is nothing we can do….nothing!
·         The requirements of the law have been fully met in us.  Rom 8:3

It is time for us to live in the grace of God, not just its shadow.
Living day by day with our savior…as Paul said
I no longer live but Christ who lives in me.  The life I now live by believing in God’s Son, who loved me and took the punishment for my sins.
This grace filled life blossoms by the indwelling of the Holy Spirit…not our strength but His.
We live beyond the rules and earning God’s love we live in the freedom born from the fullness of God’s grace in our lives causing us to live in a way that honors God and  that is summed up with one word …..Love!
This grace allows us to walk in the perfect law of liberty…. Jesus set us free from fear based motivation, set us free from condemnation and set us free to enjoy life to the fullest.
6 But now we have been released from the law, for we died to it and are no longer captive to its power. Now we can serve God, not in the old way of obeying the letter of the law, but in the new way of living in the Spirit.
Romans 7:6 (NLT)

Jesus is whispering to us….believe.  Believe that you are the sons and daughters.  Believe that you have that position and authority.   Believe that you are free….don’t go back to the old way, you are free of that.
We don't need to get free—we are free! Jesus' work on the Cross totally purchased our redemption and freedom.
Know that all that you have need of, is already finished.
Altar Call
·         Repentance for returning to the law
·         Lessoning the finished work of the cross
·         Help us to live in the freedom of grace

Prayer:  Help me to renew my mind so I can enjoy the freedom you purchased for me.  Help me experience your freedom in area of my life and give me a determination to reject any form of bondage that tries to hang onto me.    I have been bought out of slavery ….I am no longer a slave to fear of any kind, to condemnation, I will walk in the freedom of grace. ..The finished work of the cross.
